A dark and hilarious comedy.
Set in the formerly stately mansion of
the Pascal family in a Washington, DC
suburb of 1983, the play begins when
Marty brings his new fiancée, blonde
ingénue Lesly, home for Thanksgiving
dinner. Marty's engagement is a threat
to the well-being of his family and a
greater threat for Jackie-O, who has
always wanted her brother all to
herself.
It's Thanksgiving Day, 20 years after the JFK
assassination, and the hurricane raging outside is
outdone only by the storm brewing inside the Pascals'
affluent home. Marty has brought home a fiancée, and his
twin sister Jackie-O isn't pleased. She enlists younger
brother Anthony to divide and conquer, as Mama prepares
to "baste the turkey and hide the sharp objects." With
the power out and the alcohol flowing, the family's
obsession with the Kennedys and Jackie's even greater
obsession with Marty are played out in a haunting and
dangerous game.
Playwright Wendy MacLeod is known for her biting wit and
bravery in tackling the taboo. The House of
Yes, which became an award-winning film,
premiered in San Francisco at the Magic Theatre, where
it won the Bay Area Critics' Award for Best New Play in
1990, and became the second longest running show in
Magic Theatre's history. Other plays include Schoolgirl
Figure, Juvinalia, and The Water Children.
In her author's notes on The House of Yes,
she shares, "The play started with a particular house, a
house I saw in an elegant suburb of Washington, D.C.
There was just something about this chic, moneyed house
that made me want in. And Lesly begins the play wanting
in. The title came from a graffiti I saw written on a
bathroom wall: 'We are living in a house of yes.' And
that made me think about Edgar Allan Poe and pornography
and mostly about amorality. The play is about people who
have never been said no to."
