Playwright Opportunities

Call for Scripts

There are no calls for submissions in effect at this time.

Compass Theatre produces many new scripts throughout the year -- works of new and emerging playwrights as well as those who are experienced and proven but perhaps not yet widely recognized. We post calls for scripts throughout the year, especially for Challenge Theatre (local writers only), Resilience of the Spirit festival and QPlays. We urge playwrights to check back often to see what what's happening. (We try to get these postings to all the web-based sites that playwrights tend to go to.)
You are welcome to submit scripts at any time; but, to be very honest, unless we've expressed a specific need at the time, the possibility of our producing an unsolicited script is slim. If it's a script we can't use, you'll probably hear from us within a few weeks. If we are interested in the possibility of production, it could take a good deal longer.
Things to keep in mind to meet our needs: (1) Compass is a 49-seat intimate theatre with mere inches separating actors and audience, so "big" doesn't work; (2) our stage is fairly small and (depending on the set) has limited or no wing space, and no fly space; (3) we have no way for elaborate set changes, so sets need to be simple and changes minimal; (4) we have no facilities for elaborate lighting effects -- just basics; (5) due to size and economics, we just about never cast a play with more than 6 actors (the occasional exception is probably an established play on which we can count to pull in larger-than-usual audiences).
When we post calls, they will specify the address to which to submit those scripts. All other submissions, and any questions you may have, should be directed to Michael Thomas Tower (michael@compasstheatre.com)
